The Pulpwood Queen Celebrates Bollywood
Get to know Kathy L Murphy, the Pulpwood Queen, and the book club she started over 20 years ago - “where wearing tiaras is mandatory and reading our good books is the only rule.” She is the author of “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life” and “The Pulpwood Queens Celebrate 20 Years!”
The International Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guy Book Club Reading Nation is the biggest meeting and discussing book club in the world - with 800 chapters, including chapters in 20 foreign countries. On January 18, 2000, Kathy opened the only hair salon/bookstore in the country, Beauty and the Book, and quickly garnered national attention with a call from the Oprah Winfrey Organization. They wanted to do a show that featured Kathy because they thought it was clever to have a beauty shop and bookstore under the same roof. That first story went on to being featured on Good Morning, America, and Newsweek, Time, the Wall Street Journal.
And just as quickly it all went away. As a testament to Kathy’s strength, perseverance, and dedication to reading and sharing good books worldwide, the Pulpwood Queen celebrated the 21st Girlfriend Weekend virtually this past January 2021. And she selected King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema by Anupama Chopra as the Official 2021 International Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guy Book Club Selection’s January International Book of the Month pick.
When we spoke recently, Kathy told me, “I don’t know how to explain it, but I have to tell you that this [COVID] is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me in my life, this forcing myself to slow down and listen. I never would have discovered Bollywood. I have the whole last chapter of my book on how Bollywood got me through COVID.”
